On Monday, August 21st, Dixon Public Schools completed it’s purchase of a property in Nachusa, Illinois from LSSI(Lutheran Social Services of Illinois). The site contains multiple buildings and has been used by LSSI to house educational services as well as a variety of family services. Some buildings on the site will continue to by utilized by LSSI.
Dixon Public Schools has plans to update and equip one of the buildings on the site as a new therapeutic day school. The goal is to be able to provide services at this facility for students that are currently being transported out of district to meet their educational needs. It’s expected that there will be capacity at this new school to accept tuition students from outside the district to make efficient use of resources and help with the expenses.
We expect to determine a name for the new school over the next few weeks. Work that needs to be completed before the building can be utilized includes updating the HVAC system and fire alarm system. The new building could potentially open as soon at the start of the 2024-2025 school year.
Besides a new school and space for LSSI, we expect to use some buildings for storage as we continue to review the long term plans for the site.
