Community agencies unite for mass casualty drill to enhance emergency preparedness
DIXON, Ill. | December 1, 2025 – Multiple community organizations joined forces today to conduct a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) drill designed to strengthen emergency preparedness and ensure the safety of residents in Dixon and surrounding areas.
The exercise included OSF HealthCare Saint Katharine Medical Center, Dixon Public Schools, Dixon City Fire, Dixon Rural Fire, Dixon Police Department, Lee County Sheriff's Department, Lee County 9-1-1 Center, Lee County Health Department, and CGH Medical Center. Together, these agencies practiced a coordinated response to a simulated large-scale emergency, testing communication, resource sharing and patient care protocols.
“Our shared goal is to be proactive rather than reactive if an emergency should arise," shared Margo Empen, Dixon Public Schools district superintendent. "This type of training is critical because it ensures we can respond quickly and effectively."
The drill reflects the commitment of local organizations to work collaboratively in preparing for potential disasters, reinforcing that community safety is a top priority.

Athletics/Activities Secretaries are the avid engines that keep school sports running smoothly. Their work is often behind the scenes, but the impact is felt by every athlete, coach, and parent. They make the chaos look effortless! This is the perfect summation of Mrs. Arjes. Thank you for everything you do!

This week, we recognize and celebrate Mrs. Bovey, our incredible Reagan Middle School Librarian as our Spirit Stick Winner! She is the perfect example of what it means to go above and beyond for our students and staff. Whether she’s coordinating reading activities, helping a student find just the right book, supporting teachers with resources, or creating a welcoming space for everyone who walks through her doors, her pleasant demeanor, compassion, and willingness to help always shine through. She is truly one of the most accommodating and supportive people in our building. Most recently, she closed the library and transformed the space to host our Veterans Day potluck, creating a warm and meaningful setting to welcome our guest speaker veterans, and staff. It was a wonderful event, and her extra time and thoughtful planning made all the difference. Thank you, Mrs. Bovey, for everything you do each day to lift up our school community. We are grateful for you, and we appreciate the heart you put into your work.

Substitute teachers are the quiet strength of a school district, stepping in whenever they’re needed to keep classrooms running smoothly and learning on track. They bring stability during teacher absences, ensuring students continue to grow, feel supported, and stay engaged. Their ability to adapt quickly, connect with diverse learners, and uphold the district’s educational standards makes them invaluable partners in student success.
Substitute teachers not only fill temporary gaps—they reinforce the foundation of the entire school system, bringing reliability, professionalism, and heart to every classroom they enter.

Reminder: Make sure classroom teachers forward the entries to Ms. Guthrie and Mrs. Meeks at Madison School.
