A Note from The Superintendent
January 22, 2024
Good afternoon. I wanted to reach out since today’s initial two-hour delay call went out later than usual. I normally try to call school for a delay or a cancellation by 5:30 a.m. I do this because we have buses that leave to pick up students by 5:50 a.m. The goal is to get my message out before buses depart to pick up students and before students head to their bus stops.
Unfortunately, today did not allow that to happen. Today was an unusual day. This doesn’t happen often, but when it does, I know it is inconvenient for workers, parents, and students. I apologize for that, but I do not apologize for erring on the side of caution to keep our students and staff safe.
After assessing the roads this morning, I planned on having school. I was notified shortly after 6 a.m. that conditions were continuing to change and we had a bus stuck in the country that was heading to pick up students. The bus was unable to move due to ice that was developing and conditions were becoming increasingly concerning. I decided to call a two-hour delay in hopes of giving the weather time to change and our plows time to salt and clear roads. While waiting to see how the weather was progressing, I received additional communications from road commissioners and individuals driving on roads that conditions were continuing to deteriorate. At that point, I decided to cancel school for today.
Decisions like today are not easy since things were changing moment to moment. Calling school due to snow is easier since you can better predict its impact on your area and travel. Please know that I will continue to try and call school by 5:30 a.m. There may be situations like today that cause a delay, but I hope they are few and far between.
As a parent, if you ever feel the weather has caused an unsafe condition for you to transport your child to the bus stop or school, please call your child’s school and inform them of that. We want to work with you to ensure everyone arrives and comes home from school safely each day.
Please be safe in the days to come. Margo Empen
